VoIP can use any type of Internet connection. Even dialups can be accommodated but owing to the nature of dialup solutions where it is difficult to secure guaranteed bandwidth VoIP is not a recommended solution. It is preferable to convert your dialup into a permanent high speed Internet connection that will allow you to save on the cost of your phone calls to offset the increased cost of permanent connectivity.

An ADSL or high speed fixed line installation is the preferred type of Internet Connection. High speed broadband wireless solutions such as those on offer from Sentech and iBurst will also work well although in areas where there is no signal coverage and hence no high speed Internet access there will be no VoIP access.

Of course, broadband wireless connections have the advantage of being mobile which means that anywhere you have a high speed Internet connection you can make a VoIP call! This can save you dramatically on cell phone calls that you might otherwise have to make in order to stay in contact.

Can I use my cellphone GPRS / 3G connection to make VoIP calls?

No. In theory it is possible but GPRS does not have the throughput speed required.

Trial on 3G indicate that VoIP can be successfully used with a 3G enabled Internet device (such as a laptop with a 3G card)

What hardware will I need?

This is entirely up to you and what will work best for you. There are several optionslisted below for you to choose from.

The USB Phone

You can buy a simple phone handset that plugs into a spare port of your Windows XP computer. This USB phone looks like a normal handset with the only exception being that it plugs into a USB port on your computer and not into a normal phone line.

You will need a computer or laptop that is switched on and connected to your high speed Internet connection.

The IP Phone

An IP phone is an easy to use phone handset that looks and acts just like any other normal phone handset. All you do is plug it into your Internet connection and it does the rest. All our IP phones ship pre configured so that all you have to do is plug it in.

You do not need a computer to use this phone. Quick and simple for anyone who wants to start saving money and does not need to keep their existing hand set.

The Headset
